About Me

Readers of Anne Thomas Soffee’s books get a peek at parts of Richmond that not everybody sees.  In Snake Hips, the local belly dancing scene took center stage, shimmying and sparkling in Middle Eastern restaurants and dance classes all over Richmond.  In Nerd Girl Rocks Paradise City, Anne chronicled her journey from Richmond’s Open High School, where she fell in love with music journalism as an intern at ThroTTle magazine, to the heavy metal scene in early ‘90s Los Angeles.  Anne’s journey brought her full circle back to her home town, where she earned an MFA in creative writing at Virginia Commonwealth University.  With      Richmond as her home base, Anne continues to write about the city she loves and all that it has to offer – and no one knows Richmond better than Anne.

Now a parent, Anne is proud to be raising a fourth generation “Richmond boy.”  Her grandfather, the son of Lebanese immigrants, grew up in Richmond’s historic Church Hill neighborhood.  St. Anthony’s Maronite Church, which thousands of Richmonders visit each year for the Lebanese food festival, celebrated their first mass in the Soffees’ living room on Franklin Street.  Years later, Anne’s grandfather married and moved to Byrd Park, where Anne’s father grew up and started his own family.  Now, carrying on the family’s proud city tradition, Anne is raising her own son Suleiman in Richmond’s Reedy Creek neighborhood (if you haven’t heard of it yet, you will – just off of Forest Hill Avenue, it’s one of South Richmond’s best kept secrets). “Richmond is a great place to raise a family,” Anne asserts.  “There’s so much for kids to do here, so many great resources – and a lot of them are free or almost free.  Some days it’s hard to choose!”  Some of Suley’s top picks are Maymont Park, where he is a regular visitor to the petting zoo and the nature center, the James River Park system’s hiking trails, and the Children’s Museum of Richmond.

In her former “Parental Rites” column in Richmond Magazine, which ran for eight years, Anne related her love for the city where she grew up.  “As a kid, I could ride my bike to the museum, or walk barefoot up the street to see a Shakespeare play at Dogwood Dell.  I spent practically every Saturday in Carytown, watching movies at the Byrd and eating onion rings at Ma’s & Pa’s. Richmond is an awesome city for a kid – it was then and it is now.”

As a lifelong Richmonder, Anne is devoted to the city and its residents, both old and new.  She understands that a love of older houses, urban walkability and city living doesn’t disappear when you start a family.  As a parent, Anne knows the importance of raising children with an appreciation for culture, history and diversity.  As a Realtor®, Anne understands that choosing the right house is just as important as choosing the right city.  You’ve chosen Richmond – now let Anne help you with the rest.

Whether you’re starting a family, buying your first home or just switching gears, Anne will be there with you every step of the way.  “One thing that writers and Realtors® have in common is that we have to be able to read people,” she explains.  “Matching a person to a house is like matching a character to a scene.  There has to be chemistry there, and sometimes it takes a while to get that right.”

When Anne works with buyers, she takes time to find out what’s important to them in a home, in a neighborhood and in a Realtor.  “Size, price and location are obviously important to people,” she explains, “but there’s more to matching someone to a house.  What you like to do in your spare time, your personal style, your social life – these are all things that make a big difference in where you’ll be happy living.”

The same attention to detail is important when you’re deciding to sell your home.  How can you be sure you’ll get the best possible price for your home?  Do you need the assistance of a stager?  If you’ll be living in your home while it’s on the market, will showings be coordinated smoothly without inconveniencing your family?  Anne can handle all of this and more, leaving you free to make the transition to your new home.

Testimonials

“As a single woman and first-time home buyer on a tight budget, I loved working with Anne.  She helped me tune into what I was really looking for in a home, not what somebody else wanted, but what I really wanted. She gets it. She made me feel empowered and in charge of my condo purchase. I love being a homeowner and my quality of life has improved so much since I bought my little place in  the Fan.”
